The large - scale Galactic magnetic field structure and pulsar rotation measures

چکیده

Pulsars provide unique probes for the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk. The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey has discovered many distant pulsars which enables us for the first time to explore the magnetic field in most of the nearby half of the Galactic disk. The fields are found to be coherent in direction over a linear scale of ∼ 10 kpc between the Carina-Sagittarius and Crux-Scutum arms from l ∼ 45◦ to l ∼ 305◦. The coherent spiral structures and field direction reversals, including the newly determined counterclockwise field near the Norma arm, are consistent with bi-symmetric spiral model for the disk field. However, the antisymmetric rotation measure sky from the Galactic halo and the dipole field in the Galactic center suggest that the A0 dynamo is operating there.

Pulsar Rotation Measures and the Large-scale Structure of Galactic Magnetic Field

The large-scale magnetic field of our Galaxy can be probed in three dimensions using Faraday rotation of pulsar signals. We report on the determination of 223 rotation measures from polarization observations of relatively distant southern pulsars made using the Parkes radio telescope. Combined with previously published observations these data give clear evidence for large-scale counterclockwise...

The Large-Scale Magnetic Field Structure of Our Galaxy: Efficiently Deduced from Pulsar Rotation Measures

In this review, I will first introduce possible methods to probe the large-scale magnetic fields in our Galaxy and discuss their limitations. The magnetic fields in the Galactic halo, mainly revealed by the sky distribution of rotation measures of extragalactic radio sources, probably have a global structure of a twisted dipole field. The large-scale field structure in the Galactic disk has bee...

The effect of HII regions on rotation measure of pulsars

We have obtained new rotation measures for 11 pulsars observed with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope, in the direction of the Perseus arm. Using a combination of 34 published and the 11 newly measured pulsar rotation measures we study the magnetic field structure towards the Perseus arm. We find that two pulsars towards l∼ 149 (Region 1) and four pulsars towards l∼113 (Region 2) lie behind ...

Wavelet tomography of the Galactic magnetic field I . The method

We suggest a two-dimensional wavelet devised to deduce the large-scale structure of a physical field (e.g., the Galactic magnetic field) from its integrals along straight paths from irregularly spaced data points to a fixed interior point (the observer). The method can be applied to the analysis of pulsar rotation and dispersion measures in terms of the large-scale Galactic magnetic field and e...

Magnetic structure of our Galaxy: A review of observations

The magnetic structure in the Galactic disk, the Galactic center and the Galactic halo can be delineated more clearly than ever before. In the Galactic disk, the magnetic structure has been revealed by starlight polarization within 2 or 3 kpc of the Solar vicinity, by the distribution of the Zeeman splitting of OH masers in two or three nearby spiral arms, and by pulsar dispersion measures and ...

Pulsar rotation measures and the magnetic structure of our Galaxy

We have obtained 63 rotation measures (RMs) from polarization observations of southern pulsars, of which 54 are new measurements and 3 are varied from previous values. The new pulsar RM data at high Galactic latitudes are mostly consistent with the antisymmetric RM distribution found previously. For the Galactic disc, evidence for a field reversal near the Perseus arm, and possibly another beyo...
